At Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Aunt May demands an explanation from Steve Rogers for his claim that Peter Parker’s death was his fault. Rogers admits that during their last conversation he had dismissed Peter as a child who was not ready to be a superhero. He then reveals that the gunshot that killed Peter had actually been intended for him, but Peter pushed him out of the way and took the bullet himself. Overcome with anger and grief, May lashes out at both Rogers and Tony Stark, blaming them for entering Peter’s life and failing to properly prepare him for the dangers he faced. In front of the congregation, she slaps Captain America and storms out of the cathedral. Outside, the overwhelming grief causes her to collapse on the steps, but J. Jonah Jameson helps her to her feet and persuades her to return inside rather than regret leaving Peter’s funeral. During the service, Thor reflects on the fate awaiting those who live with courage and honor. He envisions Asgard and Valhalla, where heroes are remembered and celebrated alongside the gods. Among those gathered there, he sees Wolverine, Cyclops, another unidentified woman, and Spider-Man, sharing in the eternal company of legends. Elsewhere, Rogue watches Peter’s funeral on television from a roadside diner. When the waitress tries to comfort her by taking her hand, their bare skin briefly touches, causing Rogue to involuntarily absorb part of the woman’s powers or memories before fleeing. Walking through the rain, Rogue reflects on the many people she has recently lost, including Cain, Remy, Logan, Scott, and Professor Xavier. Remembering her first encounters with Angel and Nightcrawler, she becomes increasingly convinced that the recent tragedies are signs of something terrible to come. Seeking shelter, Rogue enters a church and interprets the events surrounding her as parallels to Biblical signs of the apocalypse: the deaths of Xavier and Magneto, the catastrophic flood in New York, and the persecution and imprisonment of mutants. Convinced that the end of the world is approaching, she kneels to pray for mercy for herself and those who remain alive. Meanwhile, Mary Jane stays at home instead of attending Peter’s funeral. Working on her laptop while listening to the televised coverage, she writes an article entitled “How the World Killed Spider-Man.” Beside her are photographs of Captain America, Iron Man, and Nick Fury, revealing her determination to hold Fury and the Ultimates responsible for Peter’s death.

And you people come into his life-- He--you promised to train him? And what did you do? Nothing!! He was fine before he met you. He was doing fine.”
