At the Gotham Globe, a reporter named Benson tells his skeptical editor a story about a burglary at the Simpson Timer Company, in which the manager's payroll safe was stolen, but the cash payroll itself was left in a pile on the office floor. While they talk, a new story comes in over the teletype, about a train wreck on the Gotham City Railroad, in which the crack Midwest Limited hit a stretch of track where the steel rails were missing, and crashed into the ground. Elsewhere in Gotham City, the Justice Society of America responds to a newspaper appeal for help from "the Great Raymond," an escape artist and "Exposer of Frauds," who is in fear for his life. He too has a fantastic story to tell. At the Gotham Island seaside resort, Raymond had undertaken to expose the fraudulence of Aurikon and his so-called "Gold Men." Only they weren't frauds, and they really were made of gold, and they did not appreciate his snooping into their business. So they tried to murder him, by means of the classic escape artist trick of wrapping him in chains, nailing him up in a crate, and throwing it into the river. He of course escaped from that, and then contacted the JSA, who accompany him back to Gotham Island. There they break into the troupe's dressing room, and find a huge hidden stash of stolen steel bars. This matches the pattern of recent robberies, but while they are reaching their conclusions about that, the Gold Men return, and there's a melee, with the JSA losing. All the members are knocked out, and the Gold Men abscond with their stash of steel, and snatch Raymond along with them, as they escape in an interdimensional vehicle, disguised as a "caterpillar" carnival ride. The Justice Society give chase by having Green Lantern use his power ring to duplicate their ride.

Boston Globe reporter Benson sees a connection with amazing thefts of metal and begins an investigation. Elsewhere, the great Raymond tells the JSA that he went to an exhibit at Gotham Island to expose so-called men of gold as frauds, but discovered they WERE made of gold. The Gold Men followed him, knocked him out, put him in a crate and dumped him in the river. Having escaped, he takes the JSA to the exhibit, where they confront the Gold Men, and battle them unsuccessfully. The Gold Men then board the Caterpillar ride, which spins dizzily, and when it stops, the Gold Men are gone!
Having jumped on the Caterpillar ride, the JSA suddenly find themselves in a dimension of gold, meeting with a scientist, who informs them that the Men of Gold have stolen iron from Gotham City and brought it to Xenca to power giant robots, which will end 1000 years of peace, thanks to arrogant Aurikon. Hawkman, Dr. Mid-Nite and Atom witness a robot come back to life in a bay, they battle it and its occupants, but are captured. Black Canary and Wonder Women battle the Gold Men at Xenca's National Museum who have brought a robot back to life, but are soon overcome and taken away.
At Myrla's estate, GL and Flash battle another of the Golden Robots and defeats it, but are overcome by the steam from a lake of molten gold. Myrla is captured and taken to the museum where the JSA are on display in a glass case in suspended animation. But Aurikon also has Raymond as prisoner, in an inescapable trap, from which he eventually frees himself, then busts the glass case holding the JSA. The JSA then makes short work of the robots, rounds up Aurikon and the Gold Men, jails them, and then re-creates their travel on the Caterpillar ride back to Civic City.
