At the Pentagon, government officials assess information gathered by satellites that took photographic evidence of unusual activity in Peru. The photos depict the symbol of Superman engraved on a patch of land, next to a large stone structure that appears to be a key. Lois and Jimmy are sent to investigate and they arrive at a small town called San Luca. Already outfitted in exploration clothes, Lois and Jimmy meet with a woman who introduces herself as Jessica Mirabella, a reporter working for the Daily Planet. Jessica has already secured transportation across the river thanks to Bolana, captain of a fishing boat. As they get onboard the boat and set up their equipment in the back room, Lois wonders why Superman left Metropolis for almost three weeks without saying anything. Jimmy assures her that, after everything that has happened to him recently, Superman definitely needs a break. Suddenly, Jessica and Captain Bolana barge into the room, holding guns. The real Jessica has been captured and the woman standing next to the Daily Planet is a revolutionary leader who does not take kindly to Superman interfering in her activities, but Lois and Jimmy denounce the woman as a terrorist and a drug dealer. The woman is about to put a bullet on Jimmy's body but a blur blazes through the river and tears a hole through the boat. Superman has arrived. Hours later, Superman has delivered the terrorists to the authorities. As Jimmy talks to the police, Lois is not happy that Clark left without a word and says that she has been worried about him. To apologize for his absence, Superman takes her and Jimmy to see what he has been working on: a new Fortress of Solitude, constructed in the jungles of Peru. This new Fortress, sporting the appearance of a Mesoamerican temple, was constructed next to the village of Puccalpa, the inhabitants of which have accepted Superman as an honorary member. A boy named Jesse even treats Superman like a dear friend. Within the Fortress, Superman offers private rooms for Lois and Jimmy to stay on, but Lois wants to stay alongside Clark. Clark and Lois spend the night talking about his absence. Lois says she could have helped Clark through the rough time he had but Clark did not want her to worry about him and admits he wanted to go to a place where people accepted him without question. The next day, Jimmy informs Superman of trouble happening in a dam near Puccalpa. With the help of her accomplices, the terrorist woman had escaped custody and was now threatening to destroy the dam. Superman attempts to reach the dam, only to be attacked by a mysterious, android-like being. The woman detonates the charges and destroys the dam. Without the dam to hold it, the river's water devastates Puccalpa, but Lois and Jimmy manage to evacuate everyone on time. Superman defeats the android and offers to rebuild the villagers, but the villagers say that he has done enough. Even though the rebels have been handed to the authorities and no lives were lost, Superman does not feel victorious and Lois comforts him in the depths of the new Fortress.
