In Redemption Flats, New Mexico Agent Robbins make their way into the only bar for miles in search of the handsome man in the corner. He approaches Thomas Blake explaining that he's from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and he is backed by some State Troopers with the intention of arresting him. Blake appears to come quietly, but he insists that they not cuff him - as he doesn't like being confined. Robbins wonders what happens if he insists. Suddenly, Blake leaps onto Robbins, knocking him to the floor and warning that if he insists, he will make it so he never walks right again, and spray in his face to mark his territory - and he has noticed that all of the "troopers" have the same badge number. Robbins commands his men to shoot as he runs for the phone to call for backup, but he is too late to stop Blake from catching up to him and flattening him against the ground. Unexpectedly, though, the woman who had been singing on stage earlier steps outside and shocks him into submission with a taser, ordering her companion to put the cuffs on him so he knows whose property he is. Blake wakes in a darkened room, where he discovers that he is confined with several others, and there's no way out. Somewhat nauseous, he wonders if anyone has tried to find a way out, and in response, a blinding light is accompanied by an angry voice warning that "the subjects will not attempt to leave the experiment" lest they be met with a penalty. He is warned by the others to jump immediately, because they like to zap the floor sometimes. He takes the shock instead, and recovers to find that a question has been projected onto the wall: What is the secret? He is informed that this is a new development. The confinement begins to wear on Thomas as the voice announces that the subjects have only fifteen minutes to answer the question before they receive penalties. They are instructed to open the locked containers in the centre of the room using a given combination, and inside one they find six masks. Inside the other, they find the mangled corpse of Agent Robbins - assuring them of what "penalties" means. With twelve minutes remaining to answer the question, Thomas wonders if any of them know each other. One of the prisoners introduces herself as Kani, codename "Porcelain," whose power is to make things brittle. Another of the prisoners is Shauna Belzer - the Ventriloquist. The most helpful of them so far is Damon Wells, also known as Big Shot. He explains that he is only a private investigator - with the ability to grow larger. Also imprisoned is Strix, the former assassin for the Court of Owls. Finally, there is Black Alice, who can use other people's powers. After the introductions, only five minutes remain, and the voice announces that one subject will be terminated if the solution is not found. Thomas begins to panic, prompting Big Shot to shove him hard into the wall - which springs a leak. Thomas tastes the water and realizes that it's salty. They've been buried at sea. The voice warns again that time is running out and insists that they choose among the six of them who will die. From across the room, Shauna announces that there are actually seven of them, as she yanks her ventriloquist dummy Ferdie out of her satchel, and the voice warns that termination of the chosen subject is imminent.

The Secret Six are hired to track down Tarantula.
Six highly-skilled individuals are blackmailed into working together by the mysterious Mockingbird. They are ordered to do his bidding lest he reveal their secrets and destroy their lives. Their first mission: ensure that a second planned demonstration of a weapon of mass destruction created by Zoltan Lupus fails.
The Six get word of a shipment of Thanagarian weapons heading into Gotham City. The information proves false and 16 members of the Secret Society are waiting there to either capture or kill the Six. Catman faces the Society alone in order for his comrades to escape, but soon falls to their superior numbers. The other members of the Six are captured as well.
The Six are tortured individually for what they know about Mockingbird and to serve as a warning to any of the Society members who are having second thoughts about their membership. But Catman escapes, frees the others, and the Six take down everyone there easily. The Six then kill one of the Society as a warning that they are not to be underestimated.
The Six invade a Society stronghold in Brasilia, where the Society is holding two superhuman power sources to aid in their plan to mindwipe every last superhuman hero.
The Six decide to raid a Society safehouse against Mockingbird's orders. Before Mockingbird can kill their families, though, they propose that they go against the Society on a suicide run. If they live, they’re free from Mockingbird's influence. If they die, they die with Mockingbird's enemies. Before that happens, Catman discovers it was Deadshot who killed his lions, Scandal is gay, and not only is Cheshire carrying Catman's child, but she has betrayed them to the Society. The Society responds by sending an army of supervillains to kill the Six as well as kidnapping Pariah and Lady Quark.
Although vastly outnumbered in the battle between the Six and the Society, the Six get help from various sources: Solomon Grundy, who Ragdoll convinces to aid the Six; Knockout, who's been a mole for the Six in the Society; Mockingbird, whose true identity is revealed; and Vandal Savage, who later convinces Luthor to have the Society cease the battle or he will kill him. Cheshire is shot by Deathstroke as she surrenders, and Mike the Parademon sacrifices his life to save the Six during the battle. Pariah is killed by Luthor in the interim, so that he can't warn anyone of his upcoming plans.
While the "Secret Six," now minus the Parademon, try to decide what to do next, the Secret Society organizes breakouts at all the major metahuman prisons. With the big guns occupied, Oracle and Martian Manhunter recruit second- and third-string heroes to help handle the situation. The Six learn from Scarecrow and Amos Fortune that the villains are heading to Metropolis, information they pass on to Green Arrow. But when the amassed heroes face down the villains, who unleash their secret weapon Doomsday, the Six decide to stay out of the fray.
They're a mysterious team — with a confidential roster — that walks the line between good and evil...and takes on the dirtiest, craziest missions in the DCU. And their first mission is to rescue one of their own from a North Korean prison before he's executed!
The follow-up to Villains United continues, as someone's out to get the Six, and this vicious figure from the group's past won't rest until they've been picked off one by one.
The Six learn who has been hiring assassins to take them out, while tensions flare among the group!
The Secret Six encounter the Doom Patrol, who prove no match for the Mad Hatter. Later, back at the House of Secrets, Knockout and Deadshot have an encounter of their own.
After discovering Deadshot and Knockout, Scandal heads for Tokyo and her father. But the Hatter realizes where she has gone and why, so the rest of the group follows her.
The final battle at Savage's estate leaves one villain presumably dead, and one of the Six betrayed and vowing revenge.
