Outside a bar in New York City, the Kangaroo attacks a man over money he owes him. Before he can continue, a new Spider-Man arrives and demands that he apologize. The Kangaroo is shocked to see someone wearing Spider-Man's costume, believing the original hero to be dead, while the victim and several bystanders also criticize the new Spider-Man for wearing it so soon after Peter Parker's death. The Kangaroo attacks, and the two fight through the street and into a nearby pizzeria. Although Spider-Man is knocked around during the confrontation, he gradually gains the upper hand. When the Kangaroo attempts to crush him with a car, Spider-Man strikes him in the throat and stomach, causing him to drop the vehicle on himself and knock himself unconscious. After asking whether anyone has called the police, Spider-Man runs up the side of a building and disappears. On a nearby rooftop, the exhausted hero removes his mask, revealing that he is a young black boy rather than Peter Parker. Questioning whether wearing the costume was really appropriate, he remains uncertain about his place as the new Spider-Man. Elsewhere, Reed Richards remains trapped in the Negative Zone after being defeated by the heroes of the Ultimate Universe. Determined to return home, he works to restore his equipment's targeting system and eventually succeeds. After activating the device, Reed appears in a forest and declares that he intends to fix everything. He is subsequently shown in a sterile facility wearing a black jumpsuit and a virtual-reality helmet, addressing a group of people preparing for dangerous training. In Washington, D.C., investigative reporter Brett meets with Valerie Cooper, the President's Special Advisor on Superhuman and Mutant Affairs. Brett reveals that she has uncovered evidence concerning an early government program involving mutants. While investigating a terminally ill mutant in Vancouver who had been imprisoned in a government research facility, she used his ability to experience memories and learned about the facility firsthand. Brett also discovered a map showing its location and subsequently found a government file concerning the site through public records. Cooper abruptly leaves the meeting and contacts her superiors, warning them that the information Brett has uncovered could soon become public and cause widespread unrest over the government's involvement in mutant experimentation.
