The Atom and Taren are rescued from the rats so that they may fight in Morlaidh's gladiatorial games. However, Taren is blinded before the games, by order of King Caellich's prime minister Deraegis. When the blinding is discovered, a riot breaks out, and the Atom and Taren are spirited away to a rebel camp outside the city, which Princess Laethwen also joins. Since Taren is blind, the Atom becomes leader and trainer of the rebels, who await their chance to attack and depose Caellich and Deraegis.
