After reclaiming control of the Five Points, Fisk adopts the name “The Gardener” and begins rebuilding his criminal empire. Displaying his macabre sense of humour, he places Brick Barton's severed head in a flowerpot and uses it as fertiliser. Victor Creed, now operating as Mad Dog Murphy, serves as Fisk's chief enforcer. He wages a bloody campaign against the neighbourhood's rival gangs, savagely defeating members of the Dead Rabbits, Bowery Boys, Plug Uglies and Yancy Street Gang. Creed's brutality allows Fisk to rapidly expand his territory and influence throughout the Five Points. The surviving gangs respond by seeking increasingly unusual methods of protection. Among them are the undead members of the Frankengang, the mystical Street Sorcerers Supreme, the technologically equipped Shockers and the vampiric Night Flyers. Despite their abilities, none prove capable of stopping Creed. Fisk orders Creed to eliminate the Frankengang. Creed attacks their headquarters and massacres the entire group, removing their hands as proof of their deaths. He presents the grisly trophies to Fisk, further cementing Mad Dog Murphy's reputation as the most dangerous killer in New York's underworld. As Fisk and Creed discuss their next move, they are suddenly attacked by a monstrous humanoid reptile known as the Crocodilian. The creature is powerful enough to withstand Creed's attacks and nearly overwhelms him during their brutal confrontation. Creed eventually gains the upper hand and hurls the Crocodilian through a window. Although the creature disappears after the fall, Creed suspects that it has survived. He concludes that the rival gangs have hired the Crocodilian as a ringer to eliminate both him and Fisk. Realising that their enemies are beginning to unite against them, Fisk and Creed prepare to escalate their campaign and destroy the remaining gangs before they can organise another attack. Elsewhere, the defeated gangs seek an even deadlier assassin capable of killing Mad Dog Murphy. Their search leads them to Dragonfire, a mysterious warrior from K'un-Lun who possesses the power to generate and control fire.
