First-Look Deal
A first-look deal between a studio and a comic publisher or creator's production shingle is a lower-commitment precursor catalyst to an actual option or adaptation: it signals an ongoing pipeline relationship that may surface future adaptation catalysts for that publisher's IP, but carries no guarantee any specific title will be optioned or produced.
An agreement in which a producer or talent, typically in exchange for a development/overhead fee, grants a studio or network the exclusive right to review and consider a project before it is shopped to any other buyer. If that buyer passes, the producer is free to take the project elsewhere.
Real-World Comic Market Application
A major studio signs a first-look deal with a comic publisher's newly formed production arm. This raises the probability that some of the publisher's IP will eventually be adapted, but it names no specific title and creates no Option or Adaptation Rights event on any individual comic issue by itself.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not treat a publisher-level first-look deal as a catalyst for any single, specific issue's FMV — it affects probability across a slate, not certainty for one title. Do not conflate a first-look deal (a right to review first) with an option (a right to eventually buy).
