IP Licensing
In Panel Profits, IP licensing covers the broader universe of merchandising, media, and cross-platform rights a publisher grants out for a character or property (toys, games, apparel, streaming) that is separate from and can run in parallel with any single comic issue's Adaptation Rights or Option status, and is a distinct catalyst channel from a film/TV deal.
A grant by an intellectual-property owner (the licensor) permitting another party (the licensee) to use that IP — a character, trademark, or copyrighted work — in specified ways, for a specified duration, territory, and field of use, in exchange for fees or royalties, without transferring ownership of the underlying IP itself.
Real-World Comic Market Application
A publisher licenses a flagship character for a major video game tie-in while a separate studio holds an unexercised film option on the same character. Both are real, independent IP-licensing-adjacent catalysts, and neither guarantees the other will happen.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not treat a merchandising or game license as equivalent to film/TV adaptation rights — they are separate license grants that can exist independently of each other. Do not assume exclusivity unless the specific license terms say so.
