Definition
Multiple competing rating or certification agencies can coexist in a market, each building its own reputation for consistency, and market participants often price a modest premium or discount depending on which agency's label is attached to an otherwise identical asset.
In Panel Profits
CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service) operated as CGC's principal grading competitor, using the same 0.5-10.0 numeric scale and its own encapsulation and label system. CBCS, under parent company Beckett, ceased accepting new grading submissions on April 17, 2026 after Beckett was acquired by Collectors Holdings (PSA's parent), which consolidated third-party comic grading under PSA. Previously CBCS-certified comics remain valid, tradable certified holdings; Panel Profits continues to recognize existing CBCS certification numbers for census and provenance purposes but flags CBCS as a closed, non-submitting service.
Comic-market example
A comic CBCS-graded and slabbed in 2023 keeps its CBCS label and certification number indefinitely as a valid certified asset, even though CBCS itself stopped grading new submissions in April 2026.
Common mistakes
Do not describe CBCS as a currently operating submission service. Do not assume a CBCS grade and a CGC grade for the same physical book will always match -- each agency applies independent judgment.
