“The Maker) always wins.”
Back in the city, Immortus explains to the group how his attempts to kill the Maker always ended in failure despite having endless numbers of Machine Men to overwhelm him. He then shows the group his Invincible Iron Army, which are made in his image and modeled their neural network after his mind. But Death's Head calls the army a "big mistake" as they spend all day exchanging lewd messages in binary and hacking their own systems to simulate altered states. Even the Deathloks, constructed from the corpses of dead Children, have their flaws as Death's Head recalls there were some defects in which they, despite being mindless cyborgs, spent most of their time composing "bad" science fiction short stories. Out of all of his creations, Immortus singles out Death’s Head, the latest field commander of his army, as one of his finest designs.
America then asks Immortus where they are since escaping the Children in which he explains they are in Limbo, a place where nothing ever changes. He clarifies that it is not the hell-dimension) ruled by Illyana Rasputin), but a pocket dimension where it is composed of borrowed (not stolen) time thanks to a device he created which Tony recognizes to be an Immortus Engine. Immortus further explains that the Maker cannot locate Limbo since he is limited to three dimensions despite his powerful mind even though he had thousands of years to fix himself.
Tony asks Immortus for help to fix his Immortus Engine. Immortus sees it as a prototype and asks Tony where he had found it, to which Tony replies that it was him who gave it to him, and again tries to make him remember that he is his son. Immortus pauses for a moment as he remembers seeing Kang's face before replying that he does not know Tony. Death's Head then explains to everyone that Immortus' sanity had been driven mad from thinking in four dimensions, along with being very drunk.
Immortus goes back on talking about his war with the Maker, explaining that he (Immortus) had died more times than can be counted trying to kill the Maker for reasons he had long ago forgotten, and the Maker always wins. As a result they established a temporary stalemate as the best Immortus can hope for. But Immortus fears that stalemate will end with the Ultimates’ intrusion. Spider-Man sees this as a good opportunity to leave the City, but Immortus tells him that he and the others cannot leave without risking releasing the Maker. While the Ultimates are not receptive to this, Immortus tries to reassure them that they are safe in Limbo. But just as he said this, Limbo is suddenly attacked.
Meanwhile Killmonger has been going northward to Latveria while attacking Council-affiliated locations such as returning Roxxon-owned uranium mines in Nigeria to the locals, and tearing through their militaries with a Vibranium-made sword. He eventually arrives outside of the City and confronts its infected populace.
The Children have breached Limbo and Immortus realizes the Ultimates unwittingly led them here. The Maker speaks through the Children, stating that he had waited two thousand years to find Limbo and specifically its Immortus Engine. Immortus and the Ultimates defend the Engine from the Children until the former teleports it away from the Maker's reach. Immortus then gives a powerful blast of energy into Tony's Engine and states that it must be destroyed from falling into the Maker's hands. Tony begs him not to destroy it before suddenly his armor reactively shoots an energy beam into Immortus' face, badly wounding him. The blast also causes Immortus to remember Tony. America uses his powers to evacuate her team along with a Deathlok cyborg, and against Tony's will, to escape Limbo and leaving Immortus behind.
The Children strike down Death's Head before they confront Immortus. The Maker, speaking through the Children, tells Immortus that he plans on torturing him for eternity before demanding for the Engine. But Immortus replies that he cannot have it since it is gone, and without the Engine, Limbo had run out of time. The pocket dimension begins to erase itself along with everything inside. Before fading to nonexistence, Immortus tells Death’s Head that Death's Head 18 was his favorite.
The Ultimates have returned to where they started, standing in the outskirts of the City. As Tony sits mourning his father, and unknown to everyone, Doom silently communicates with the Maker, who thanks his counterpart for finding Limbo, and that killing Immortus was just the beginning.
