Danielle Moonstar is trapped alone in the Danger Room at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Unbeknownst to her, the safety settings have been disabled by Charles Xavier. Moonstar climbs up a cliff intending to escape the Brood and to find the exit of the training facility, but finds the Brood waiting at the top. Startled, she falls and is knocked unconscious. Meanwhile, the four remaining New Mutants; Xuân Cao Mạnh, Samuel Guthrie, Rahne Sinclair, and Roberto Da Costa along with dance instructor Stevie Hunter exit the cinema at the Salem Center Mall after watching . While Hunter goes off to call the mansion to ensure all is in order, the students stop for some ice cream. Some local students, including Frank and Diane, approach the group and strike up a friendly conversation. Elsewhere in the mall, after her phone call to the mansion goes unanswered, Hunter is grabbed by Michael Rossi who claims that the New Mutants are in danger. From inside Project Wideawake's base of operations, analysts observe the New Mutant's activities in the mall. While Agent Gyrich explains to Sebastian Shaw the danger that mutants pose to the national security of the United States, unaware the Shaw is himself a mutant. Shaw asks Gyrich if he intends to use the Sentinels against the New Mutants, but Gyrich states that would cause too much of a public disturbance, instead he intends to send agents to take the students into custody. However, Shaw has his own agenda in mind for the young mutants. Back at the mail, government agents sent by Gyrich, including John Ogilvie, arrive at the mall to take custody of the four New Mutants. They initially intend to go peacefully, but soon Hunter and Rossi arrive on the scene and help free the students from custody. Then, four Sentinels arrive at the mall to capture the mutants, but they fight back against the robots and eventually defeat them. After the Sentinels have been disabled, the young mutants leave the mall with Hunter and Rossi while Ogilvie and other federal agents are taken into custody by local police. When the group returns to the school, they discover Moonstar unconscious on the Danger Room floor. As they approach, she recovers and warns them of the experience she had with the Brood.

The Sentinels attack the New Mutants, who learn that they are caught up in a web of intrigue involving the government. The Hellfire Club wants the New Mutants. Col. Rossi returns from the dead. Psyche's attack seems to have been initiated by Prof. X.
In a small town in Colorado, Bobby and Sam have found the missing Karma but she seems almost comatose. It turns out that this is because her mind is inside of the body of David Haller, also known as Legion. One of David's more violent personalities takes over and he lashes out at Magik and Magma. He then takes off to track down and kill Dani Moonstar who is locked up in the local jail.
The New Mutants visit Professor X in their new X-Men uniforms in the wake of facing down his son, Legion. Later as the team settles down to unwind, they are attacked by their former teammate Cypher, thought long dead.
While the New Mutants react in shock to Cypher's apparent killing of Warlock, the resurrected Hellions attack!
Dani and Sunspot race to save Magma's life while Cannonball, Karma and Magik try to rescue Doug from the revived Hellions and Warlock makes his way back to the battlefield.
In an undisclosed location, a military expedition returns from "hell". Meanwhile, Doug tries to heal his relationships with the other New Mutants as he rejoins the team and Warlock convalesces. And Magik tells Emma Frost where she's been, who she really is, and why she's back.
Scott sends the New Mutants (minus Magma and Magik) to Japan to deal with an attack from Sauron and several Savage Land mutates. While they work to resolve the situation, Emma presses Scott on his reasons for keeping these mutants together on their own team, and eventually realizes that he's looking for a leader to succeed him.
While the rest of the New Mutants hit the casino in Vegas, Hela sends Dani to Oklahoma to lead the Asgardians who have fallen in the siege back to her realm.
