Comics grow darker and more socially aware. Wolverine, Punisher, Swamp Thing debut. Creator-driven storytelling emerges.
Newsstand variants carry meaningful scarcity premiums. First appearances from this era are blue-chip investments.
In illiquid alternative asset markets, sovereign blue-chip holdings trade at an exponential multiple over mid-grade float due to institutional accumulation and inelastic seller reservation prices.
The New Gods sprang from two survivors of the old world. The New Gods of New Genesis inherited their nobility and strength from Balduur, while the New Gods of Apokolips inherited their cunning and evil from a sorceress. While on a short break from warring, Avia asks her husband, Izaya the Inheritor, to sing as she's never heard him do so. Steppenwolf, alongside his nephew, Darkseid, ambushes Izaya, a leader of New Genesis. In the ensuing fight, Steppenwolf kills Avia with a fatal Radion bolt. Darkseid, wanting to start a war, pretends to kill Izaya, knowing that Izaya will seek vengeance. Darkseid, Steppenwolf, and their forces leave. Izaya's forces attack Apokolips in vengeance. Now relegated to a royal bunker, Darkseid presents his mother, Queen Heggra, with the X-Element, a new unstable element accidentally created on Apokolips. Metron appears and claims that Darkseid promised the X-Element to him. Darkseid claims that he said that he would provide the X-Element to Metron so that he can build his Mobius Chair only if Metron creates the Matter Threshold, a dimensional portal to anywhere. Using the new Matter Threshold, Steppenwolf assaults New Genesis, but Izaya kills him with his War-Staff and the rest of Steppenwolf's forces retreat. Metron appears to Izaya and explains that Darkseid is Izaya's true enemy. As the war continues to escalate, Izaya ventures into the wastes of New Genesis. He finds a wall proclaiming that Izaya inherits The Source. Now seeking peace, Izaya makes a deal with Darkseid, who now rules Apokolips following Queen Heggra's death in the war. As a peace pact, Darkseid trades his son, born to Tigra, for Izaya's son, despite her protests about the decision. Darkseid secretly plans with Granny Goodness to raise Izaya's son in such a way that he will decide to escape, which would break the pact. Granny Goodness names the child Scott Free as a joke on that plan. Darkseid's son, older than Scott and unaware of his true parentage, meets Izaya, whom he has been told is his father. Now calling himself Highfather, Izaya cares for the child and calls him Orion.
