He ends Azmodus' role in the affair after violence erupts. As he leaves, the Spectre makes Rabbi Jacob and Reynolds feel each other's grief. Professor Nicodemus Hazzard visits the members of the Justice Society of America that fought alongside the Spectre during World War II. From the stories they tell him about the Spectre, he learns that three mystical objects created the zone of influence, which kept magic-based heroes from ending the war, and that one of those objects, the Spear of Destiny, could destroy the Spectre.
Professor Nicodemus Hazzard learns about the history of the Spear of Destiny since World War II, along with its current whereabouts. The elemental Naiad destroys the oil company that killed her human form, and so the Spectre goes to Tokyo to avenge those Naiad has killed. During their battle, the Spectre journeys into Naiad's soul, where he encounters Gaea. Believing the Spectre is solely responsible to the damage in Tokyo, the President of the United States enlists Superman to take the Spear of Destiny and stop the Spectre.
Hazzard learns that the Spear of Destiny has been imprinted with Hitler's paranoia and will infect whoever holds it. Superman arrives in Tokyo and injures Naiad and Gaea with the spear. The Spectre shows Superman what would happen if he does not give up the Spear. Superman gives the spear to the Spectre, who entombs it within the debris that the Spectre caused to be hurled into the air and sea when he destroyed Vlatava. Finally, the Spectre tells Superman that there will not be a repeat of what happened in Vlatava, and that he will only confront evil on an individual basis.
