Freddy Freeman defeats Red O'Riley with a triple jump in checkers, making him think that Red's worried about something else. Red admits he's given a bunch of money to oil wildcatting (drilling for oil where there isn't any known source) and that he doesn't really trust Bob Davis and Jeannie. Freddy asks for their address to have “his friend” look into it and soon calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and flies off to find them. At the wildcat oil well, Jeannie worries that they've dug 300' and that they should strike soon, while Bob is sure there's oil there. However, he finds that the Medicine Man of a nearby tribe is trying to stir them up to attack him, since his oil field is on their sacred hunting ground of their dead chief, Running Water. Thereof, the Medicine Man prays for the spirit of Running Water to speak with “tongue of fire” to give them a sign to attack the two white people when there's a sudden explosion of fire from the oilfield. Soon, Junior arrives and stops the fire by capping off the derrick, happy that they struck oil… just as the braves attack their field. Junior fights them back and they soon retreat as one of the braves, Deer Feet, attacks Junior, but when he easily disarms him, he only asks Junior to scalp him, the price of his defeat. Junior generally refuses and instead takes him somewhere safe… where he ties him to a chair at Bob's house. Later, Bob says he's thinking of selling his oilfield to oil baron McGaffrey and his oil syndicate, though Junior points out that won't stop the attacks. To investigate further, Junior decides to use some makeup to adopt a Native American disguise as Deer Feet and the Medicine Man says the Spirit of Running Water says they must attack the white people again. When Freddy questions this, the Spirit appears and says that he won't rest as long as white people remain living on his land. However, Freddy's guise is broken when Deer Feet's father, the Chieftain, runs up to him and finds that it's not him and they quickly capture Freddy. The Medicine Man asks the Spirit what happened to Deer Feet and he claims he's dead and they decide to burn him at the stake and then go kill the other white people. Luckily, the fire burns off Freddy's gag before the rest of him and he calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. once more. He soon flies in to stop the Natives' attack and they run away and reveals that the “Spirit of Running Water” was just McGaffrey, the oil baron, in disguise, trying to steal Bob and Jeannie's oil and was paying off the Medicine Man and created the fire and Spirit idea with phosphorus bombs. Further, he shows the braves that Deer Feet isn't dead and the Natives and Bob and Jeannie resolve to be peaceful. Later, Red defeats Freddy at checkers and he thinks that he's never going to beat him again now that Red isn't worried.
