Freddy Freeman is peddling the Daily Gazette at the docks, selling that Prof. Pokoik is investigating the mystery of some underwater mountains. He soon spots Prof. Pokoik himself and shows off his experimental ship he's heading out on, buys a paper and shows that he's hired some divers to help him investigate the underwater mountains, which he believes hold invaluable minerals. The Captain soon tells him that they'll be leaving soon and Prof. Pokoik lets Freddy come with them on the voyage. Some days later, diver Blount heads into the water and the Captain says the signal that he's coming back is three short tugs. However, after some time, they find that Blount's line has been cut and they worriedly send down the other diver, Ames. He soon has his line cut too and Freddy offers to do it himself, finding that the other two divers were attacked by knife-wielding mermen! To that end, Freddy calls CAPTAIN MARVEL to become Captain Marvel, Jr. and finds the mermen retreating to an underwater mountain cave. He soon finds that the cave gives way to a place that is bright and dry and full of oxygen too, no particularly valuable minerals around and two divers bound next to a big rock. He quickly frees them and notes that they must have some reason to keep them alive and goes to find more. Junior finds that the King of the Mermen notes that theirs is the last Merman Kingdom and that he is afraid of humans invading them. He spots Junior and orders his mermen to attack him, but Junior easily punches them aside and they finds their spears do little to harm him. The King decides to offer diplomacy instead and Junior explains everything going on. The Merman King says that they don't have any of the minerals Prof. Pokoik is looking for, but does give the World's Mightiest Boy a necklace made of multi-colored pearls for his time. He soon leaves with Ames and Blount, swearing their knowledge of this underwater kingdom to secrecy. Returning to the ship, Junior turns back into Freddy and offers the pearl necklace to Prof. Pokoik to make up for his loss.
