The direct market matures. Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen redefine the medium. Speculator boom begins.
High print runs mean condition is the key differentiator. 9.8 census numbers matter more than total prints.

Eric and Linda Strauss have begun merging into Doctor Fate regularly, and they defeat several minor Demons summoned by amateur occultist Joachim Hesse. One small demon escapes the destruction, and begins hunting Fate down across the city. Nabu is attempting to learn more about humanity by living as one of them, using Kent Nelson's reanimated corpse as his vessel. Eric and Linda return to find him sitting on their couch watching television sit-coms and getting drunk for the first time, having been oblivious to their desperate need for help. They begin arguing about how under-prepared they are having almost gotten killed, and Eric angrily storms out of the room. Eric reflects in his room alone until Linda comes to apologize, although he is still uncomfortable with her romantic feelings towards him. Later that evening the demon comes crashing through Linda's window while she's changing, and they merge into Doctor Fate again to blast it. Nabu bursts in to stop them and strikes a conversation with the monster, determining that he is friendly. They decide to let it live with them as a pet, and use rudimentary magic to change it into the form of a dog. Elsewhere, I... Vampire sits alone in his mansion and laments his condition. His immortality has kept him alive long past since the point where he has grown so weary and tired he longs to die, desperately wishing for the release of eternal sleep. This has also driven him to lose his compassion for humanity.

Dr. Fate stops a small-time occultist but a demon is left behind.
Rejecting the Helm of Thoth, Khalid performs a heroic deed with the help of its power despite himself. In a daze, Khalid follows his cat Puck back to the mask, which Khalid puts on. Elsewhere, Khalid's father gets into a car accident.
Khalid saves his father from his wreck with the power of Fate, but finds that his father may not regain his sight. After some brief instruction from Nabu, who inhabits the Helm of Thoth, Khalid heads out and encounters the pack of dogs that caused his father's accident. Wounded in a brief battle, Khalid is surprised to find himself quickly healed.
Khalid tries to use the power of the Helm of Thoth to repel the floods...and freighter...sent by Anubis.
Khalid seeks out the help of the gods in how to use the helm of Thoth to defeat Anubis.
Bastet tells Khalid to seek out Anubis, and the helm directs him to the hospital where his father is recovering. There, Fate fights to protect Mr. Nassour from Anubis, eventually agreeing to exchanging Thoth's helmet for his parent's health.
Blinded by Anubis, Khalid discovers he can see only while wearing the helm of Fate. He returns his father home and turns to his studies, but Bastet prods him into confronting Anubis again, which ends with Khalid in the House of the Dead.
Anubis takes Fate to the land of the dead, but, in the absence of Osiris, Thoth refuses to record the judgment Anubis decrees for Khalid. Thoth gifts Khalid with his staff of power, which gives him the power of his pharaonic ancestors and the creator god Atum, enough power to defeat and humble Anubis.
