Although Batman is able to ensure Alfred's escape to safety, he is unable to defeat the augmented Timothy Slaycroft Junior, even when he attempts to tell the young man the truth about the death of his mother. After Batman is rendered unconscious, the general attempts to unmask him, but Porter stops him. He intends to use Batman as the subject of another experiment on his drugs, and will only allow the Dark Knight to be unmasked when he does so of his own free will, as a sign of the vigilante's submission. Alfred is able to find a boat on the other side of the island and is picked up by a passing trawler, but cannot call for help from any of Batman's allies. Porter traps Batman in a underground chamber that will fill up with water in three days. The only way to escape the chamber is to pull on a chain hanging from the roof that will open the metal door, but the door weighs over eight hundred pounds. The only way Batman will have the strength to pull it himself is if he takes a new, more addictive version of Porter's original pills. Batman is able to negotiate for Porter to provide him with food, weights and blankets to give him more time to build up muscle. Up in the main mansion, Sancroft becomes frustrated with Porter's refusal to share the formula for the drugs with him, and begins torturing Porter to get the full recipe. Down in the chamber, Batman uses the weights to flatten the end of the bars so that he can work away the mortar of the bricks around the wall so that they can be removed. By turning the bed in the room update down and tying it to the chain using the blankets, Batman is able to use the bricks as additional weights, holding the door open long enough for him to escape. When he reaches the main house, Batman attempts to capture Porter and Sancroft, but Porter uses a recording of Sancroft's voice to order Sancroft's son to kill his father. Batman takes Porter back to Gotham to stand trial. Having taken a sample of his own drugs before his capture, Porter attempts to escape prison, but suffers an overdose and dies in the prison hospital.
