Red Wolf uses skills gleaned from another time to subdue the werewolf he knows to be the young Jake Gomez without hurting the boy. Struggling with the beast bound by his lasso, he is thrown off as JJ shoots a net trap and downs the creature. Red Wolf prevents her from electrocuting him, and sings a soothing prayer to the trapped monster. Jake wakes at his home, finding Red Wolf and Granny Rora outside his room. Red Wolf brings Jake out to Mighty Maxine’s restaurant for breakfast, where Jake apologizes to the man. The U.S. Marshal warns that his power untamed could prove greatly destructive, and agrees to take Jake under his wing in a mentee role. He regales him with the song of the wolf, a legend involving a farmer boy who took on the powers of the wolf to protect himself, and was cursed until he could live without causing death. Red Wolf believes this to be the tale of Jake’s ancestors. They’re interrupted by JJ, calling from a municipal center under siege by the monsters Jake fought in the desert. They rush over to provide support, opening the trunk so JJ can access her equipment. The cyborgs demand they hand over the werewolf, but upon Red Wolf’s refusal, a firefight breaks out between them. One creature, Whiptail, falls, tranquilized by JJ, and his compatriots retrieve him, needing to get him back to “Mother”. The marshals don’t give chase, already suspecting where they are going. Jake checks in with Molly, asking where Granny Rora is. Realizing that the monsters may have identified him, he and Molly rush to find a ransacked and empty home. Jake finds Rora’s phone, with a video of the company goons they had frightened off in the desert kidnapping the old woman. He hurries outside, hops on Molly’s dirtbike, and shoots off in the direction of Life Pharmaceuticals before his friend can stop him. Molly runs to tell the marshals, who realise Jake has fallen directly into a trap. At Life, Dr. Makowski is updated by Mr. Wagner on their new captives, Jake and Rora. Wagner tells Makowski that the grandmother has been made ready for experimental infusions, and gives thanks to the technologically enhanced Makowski for the future she promises them all as Mother.
