On the massive starship Sanctuary, Starfox (Eros of Titan, Thanos’s brother) has gathered practically every major cosmic hero and figure in the Marvel Universe—including Nova (Richard Rider), Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, Darkhawk, Moondragon, and Phyla-Vell. The original Guardians of the Galaxy are notably absent, shattered by the recent Infinity Wars event. Starfox projects a pre-recorded hologram of Thanos’s final will and testament. In the video, Thanos mocks the room but drops a terrifying bombshell: knowing he would eventually die, he uploaded his consciousness into the mind of an unsuspecting person in the galaxy. He hints that this person will eventually transform into him, effectively resurrecting the Mad Titan. The revelation instantly sparks chaos and paranoia across the room. The gathered heroes immediately begin shouting and pointing fingers, trying to deduce who holds Thanos's mind. The primary suspect is Gamora, given her deep connection to him, but she is nowhere to be found. Before the heroes can tear each other apart, the gathering is brutally ambushed. The Black Order (Cull Obsidian, Proxima Midnight, and Corvus Glaive), working alongside Hela, the Asgardian Goddess of Death, rips into the ship. Their goal isn't just a random attack; they are there to steal Thanos's decapitated body. During the frantic, violent skirmish, Hela unleashes a device that tears open a massive, unstable artificial black hole/wormhole right inside the ship. As the Black Order and Hela escape with Thanos’s corpse, the gravity well of the collapsing wormhole sucks in dozens of cosmic heroes. Powerful figures like Silver Surfer, Nova, and Darkhawk fight against the pull but are violently dragged in and scattered across deep space. Only a tiny handful of heroes manage to fight the gravity well or get pulled out by the skin of their teeth. The scene shifts to a completely different part of space, where a depressed, heavily bearded Peter Quill (Star-Lord) and Groot are drifting in their ship, drinking away their sorrows over the dissolution of their family. Suddenly, their ship is rocked as several bodies crash violently nearby. Peter and Groot go outside to find a ragtag group of heroes who barely survived the wormhole: Beta Ray Bill, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Moondragon, and Phyla-Vell. Before they can even process what is happening, local intergalactic authorities arrive to arrest the group for causing a disturbance. Stepping up to protect the newcomers, Peter Quill lies and announces that they are all under his protection because they are the Guardians of the Galaxy. With this accidental, makeshift lineup forced together by a cosmic crisis, the new era of the Guardians is officially born.
