Census Slabs
'Census Slabs' refers to the total documented population of a given comic issue that has been graded and encapsulated by a certification service, broken out by grade tier, as published in that service's public population census. Exactly as shares outstanding fixes the denominator for equity valuation, the census fixes the denominator for certified-tier scarcity and market-capitalization math in Panel Profits: it is the known, countable supply against which per-grade FMV is applied.
The total number of a company's shares currently held by all shareholders, as distinct from authorized-but-unissued shares, establishes the fixed supply against which per-share metrics like market capitalization and earnings per share are calculated.
Canonical Mathematical Formula
Certified Population[grade] = Census count reported at that specific numeric grade for a specific issue/printingReal-World Comic Market Application
If CGC's census shows 42 copies of an issue certified at 9.8, that 42 is the fixed denominator collectors and Panel Profits use when discussing 9.8-tier scarcity for that book, distinct from its 9.6 or 9.4 census counts.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not sum census counts across all grade tiers and treat that total as the 9.8-tier population. Do not treat census population as equal to raw print run -- it only reflects copies that have actually been submitted and certified.
