CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company), founded in January 2000 and now headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, is the comic industry's dominant third-party grading service. It assigns a numeric condition grade on a 0.5 (Poor) to 10.0 (Gem Mint) scale and encapsulates the book in a sealed, tamper-evident holder (a 'slab') bearing a unique certification number. Panel Profits treats CGC certification numbers and grades as the primary trust anchor for its certified-tier population and FMV data: only certified, cert-number-verifiable copies feed the platform's graded-tier benchmarks.
Independent third-party certification (analogous to a bond credit-rating agency) is a business model in which a neutral outside party inspects an asset, assigns it a standardized grade or rating, and puts its name behind that assessment so buyers and sellers can transact without each independently verifying quality.
Real-World Comic Market Application
A raw copy of Incredible Hulk #181 (first full appearance of Wolverine) submitted to CGC and returned as 9.6 NM+ is sealed with a label showing that grade and a unique certification number, which is independently verifiable through CGC's public certification lookup and counted in the issue's 9.6-tier census.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not treat a seller's self-declared condition ('looks like a 9.6 to me') as equivalent to an actual CGC certification. Do not confuse a CGC Signature Series label (witnessed autograph) with a standard Universal grading label -- they certify different things.
