Greenlight
A greenlight on a comic-derived film or series is a materially stronger, more durable Asset Catalyst than an Option or an unexercised Adaptation Rights deal, because committed production financing significantly raises the odds the project actually reaches a theatrical or streaming release rather than stalling in Development Hell.
The formal decision by a studio or network to approve production financing for a project, authorizing it to move from development into pre-production and principal photography. Greenlight authority typically rests with senior studio executives or a green-light committee, with very large budgets sometimes requiring parent-conglomerate approval.
Real-World Comic Market Application
After years of holding adaptation rights with no forward motion, a studio finally greenlights a comic property's film with a committed production budget and start date. This is the point at which Panel Profits should treat the underlying catalyst as substantially de-risked compared to the rights-holding period that preceded it.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not treat rights acquisition, casting announcements, or a first-look deal as a greenlight — none of those guarantee financing has actually been committed. A greenlit project can still stall or be shelved, but it carries materially more weight than an unfinanced deal.
