Liquidity Spike
A 'Liquidity Spike' is a sudden, temporary surge in auction and dealer transaction volume for a specific issue or character, usually triggered by a real-world catalyst (a film announcement, a character's death or return in current continuity, a grading-population correction). It is the mirror-image counterpart to Liquidity Floor: a Liquidity Floor describes a stable price level established over many repeated transactions, while a Liquidity Spike describes a short-lived surge in the number of transactions themselves, which can occur well above, at, or even temporarily below an issue's established floor before volume normalizes.
A liquidity spike is a short-lived, sharp increase in trading volume and buy-side interest in an asset, typically triggered by a specific news event or catalyst, that temporarily compresses bid-ask spreads and accelerates price discovery before volume reverts to its prior baseline.
Real-World Comic Market Application
Following a film-casting announcement for a previously minor character, that character's key issue saw more public auction sales in the following six weeks than in the prior two years combined -- volume that mostly reverted to baseline within a quarter, characteristic of a liquidity spike rather than a durable re-rating of the issue's floor.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not treat a liquidity spike's peak transaction price as a new, durable Liquidity Floor -- a floor requires repeated clearing at a price band over time, not a short burst of catalyst-driven activity.
