Option (Option Agreement)
When a comic property is optioned by a studio, Panel Profits treats this as the earliest, lowest-durability stage of the adaptation pipeline: an Asset Catalyst with a defined expiration (the option period) and a real chance of lapsing with no adaptation ever occurring, distinct from a Greenlight or an exercised Adaptation Rights purchase.
A contract granting a producer or studio the exclusive right, for a defined option period (commonly around 18 months), to acquire the rights to underlying source material (a book, play, comic, or screenplay) at a later date under agreed terms. Optioning is not purchasing: the producer buys only the exclusive right to buy the rights later via a separate rights-purchase agreement, and if the option lapses unexercised, exclusivity ends and the rights revert to the original rights holder.
Real-World Comic Market Application
A studio options the film rights to an independent comic's flagship character for an 18-month period. No production commitment exists yet — if the studio doesn't exercise the option and complete a rights-purchase agreement within that window, the rights simply revert to the publisher/creator and any speculative FMV run built on the option news should be expected to fully unwind.
Domain Guardrails & Anti-Patterns
Do not treat an option announcement as equivalent to a greenlight or a completed rights purchase — most options lapse without a film or series ever being made. Do not assume an option's exclusivity is permanent; it is time-bound by the option period.
