War is Hell!
Sergeant John Kowalski is dishonorably discharged by the United States Marine Corps for espionage and treason. His rank is reduced to Private and his citizenship is revoked, making him deported back to Poland. There he was to meet up with his uncle in Krakow but on the way he was stopped by Dr. Eric Ostergan a German member of the underground who fled Germany to warn of Hitler's attack on Poland.
Ostergan attempted to get Kowalski to come with him so that he could help warn them of the attack but Kowalski dismissed Ostergan. That night an invading force of Nazis bombed Poland killing Kowalski's girlfriend to the point of unrecognition and mortally wounding Ostergan who cursed Kowalski with his dying breath.
While looking for survivors in Krakow Kowalski was ambushed by a scavenger and knocked out. When he awoke he fought off the scavenger until both were killed by a collapsing chimney. When Kowalski awoke he saw Death and thought it was after a little girl so Kowalski led her to the Polish Army. When the soldier seemed unable to see him Death informed Kowalski that he was dead and soon after the Polish convoy was attacked by a Nazi tank killing the girl.
Kowalski pleads with Death as to why he is in this hell and it simply replies that he bears Ostergan's curse and that he as a coward needs die a thousand times before his true death.
