The Punisher survived a Maggia ambush at the Red Grotto Restaurant in Brooklyn's Bay Ridge. While recording his war journal, his date Audrey arrived and quickly learned that he was the Punisher. Frank told Audrey the story of how he became the Punisher, starting with the execution of his family.

After the burial of his family, a police officer named John Laviano told Frank about Bruno Costa, the man who executed his family and had ties to the Maggia. In his first war journal entry as the Punisher, Frank attacked the Maggia's Central Numbers Drop in Newark. Meanwhile, an inspector informed Laviano that the Punisher had stolen files on Bruno Costa.

In the Punisher's seventh war journal entry, he opened fire on Byron Hannigan and Luis Allegre at the Playtime Club at the Catskills, killing them both. Frank Costa was greeted by his younger brother Bruno's children before reprimanding him for failing to kill the Punisher and ordered him to relocate to Florida.

Frank went to Punta Verde, Florida, where he met his former Vietnam War comrade the Mechanic. In Punta Verde, the Punisher went underwater and planted a bomb by a nearby oil well before breaking into Bruno's residence. Bruno and his associates Kolsky and Skinner learned of the Punisher's presence. In order to create a distraction, the Punisher detonated the bomb by the oil well and caused Bruno and Skinner to panic. Skinner rushed outside, where he was shot dead by the Punisher. The Punisher saw the front door open and instead, entered the house by jumping through a window. He went downstairs to an aquarium, where Kolsky held him at gunpoint. As the gangster attempted to execute the Punisher with his gun, the vigilante dodged and accidentally, shot the aquarium, breaking the glass and releasing a shark that killed the former. He finally caught up to Costa.

Frank told Audrey that after his own attack on Bruno Costa, the Maggia had sent someone of their own to stab the gangster in the base of the skull with an icepick. Then, Frank expressed how everytime he kills a criminal, he never feels that his family is avenged, but if he had killed Bruno himself, he would have gotten his revenge. After hearing Frank's story, Audrey offered him a massage before attempting to stab him. Frank quickly pulled out a gun from under his pillow and shot her before revealing that he had only arranged the date with her to be able to kill her, as she was a Maggia assassin. However, Frank declared that killing her still wasn't enough.

Afterwards, she told them to tell their superiors at S.H.I.E.L.D. that the Huntress would come after them. An agent named Scott Lawrence fled to an apartment, where the Huntress had followed him and revealed herself to be Bobbi Morse. After Scott allowed her to rest in his apartment, he asked her why she attacked them.

Bobbi recounted that when a S.H.I.E.L.D. lawyer named Orlando R. Zarate went to testify before Congressman Kirk and a committee, a bomb went off and injured her. Afterwards, Kirk asked Bobbi to work for her and help him investigate S.H.I.E.L.D., implying that the bombing could have been an inside job. Moments later, her mentor Dr. Wilma Calvin encouraged her to accept Kirk's task. She subsequently became the Huntress.

After finishing her story, Scott told her about Rico Santana, Santana's wife Angela, and Rojo-Jo Joaquin and that they would be meeting on a yacht the next night.

The next night, Bobbi and Scott went to Santana's party, where they met him. When Santana asked Bobbi if he could talk to Scott alone, she followed them both and overheard them arguing about their money taken by the Huntress. As Santana prepared to leave for Monte Muerte with Scott, Bobbi changed into her Huntress guise and followed them further.

Once inside of Santana's mansion, she was attacked and knocked unconscious by Rojo-Jo Joaquin, then brought to Santana. Then, Santana received a transmission from Colonel Sanjha, who announced that he had prepared a mercenary army poised to invade oil fields in the Persian Gulf, but also asked for his payment. Santana unsuccessfully attempted to get Scott to request more money from S.H.I.E.L.D., then ordered Joaquin to kill him and revealed that he had killed Zarate.

After regaining consciousness, Bobbi sprung up and defeated Joaquin, then defeated Santana before cutting Scott loose from a chair. Santana was shot by his wife Angela, who then shot Scott. Believing Santana to be dead, his wife offered Bobbi a partnership in which they took control of his assets. Bobbi angrily grabbed Angela by the neck before Santana, who was still alive, shot her before falling down and actually dying.

Back at Scott's apartment, Bobbi found a letter from Nick Fury regarding the Huntress. Then, Bobbi declared that Fury was "playin' with fire."

| StoryTitle4 = The Messiah in the Saddle Resolution | Synopsis4 =On March 3, 1938, in Nevada, a western actor named Noble Flagg shot a man dead and activated a device called the 'quaker that destroyed the man's cabin.

Sabbath reminded Fortune of his fourteen thousand dollar debt to her, when Len Sandler of Apex Pictures called for him and told him about Noble Flagg, who had returned to Hollywood and claimed that he had "returned to save Sin City from the Hand of God", as well as Flagg's "financial advisor", who was actually Olga Cimaglia.

Fortune accepted Sandler's job offer and boarded the Mississippi Queen, then was driven to Lily Germaine's residence by Sabbath in hopes of getting information on Flagg. When Fortune arrived, Flagg and several criminals were threatening Lily, so he intervened and attacked them, but was unable to save the woman from being shot. Flagg escaped and caused an earthquake that was unsuccessful in killing his enemy. Later, Flagg caused earthquakes that destroyed gambling casinos, opium dens, bordellos, and burlesque theaters, declared several, including Dominic Fortune, to be dead, and claimed that they were the "Hand of God." Meanwhile, Fortune phoned Olga and declared that the reports of his death had been "extremely exaggerated."

In response, Olga had a man named Jack board the Mississippi Queen, where Fortune defeated him. Sabbath phoned Fortune and told him that Flagg approached the L.A. mob about the 'quaker. Fortune learned from Jack that Flagg had already started another earthquake. During the earthquake, Flagg gave Olga a briefcase supposedly full of money and drove to the earthquake with the 'quaker, while she ordered a man to kill him at the airfield and learned that the briefcase was filled with shredded newspapers. Flagg attempted to escape in a helicopter with ten million dollars and the 'quaker and was attacked by Fortune. Olga appeared at the airfield to confront Flagg, who shot her. Then, Flagg took off in his helicopter, but crashed because he forgot to open the skyline.

Several weeks later, Fortune was reunited with Sabbath, who was relieved, believing that he could finally pay his fourteen thousand dollar debt. However, Fortune explained that he would be unable to do so after making a bet. Then, he and Sabbath drove off.
