Grave Obligations
Kyodai Ken's sister Naoko declares a vendetta on Batman, seeking to avenge her brother's death. Naoko's ninja clan forbids her to pursue this vendetta, as the clan's leader Furukawa owes a life debt to Batman, but Naoko remains steadfast. This situation greatly troubles Kano, the clan's enforcer, who harbors feelings for Naoko.
To protect Naoko, Kano pursues Batman's life himself, intending to take any disgrace and punishment that might await Naoko. Naoko discovers this plan and, touched by Kano's devotion, agrees that they will kill Batman together.
Batman engages in a short battle with the two ninja, which is cut short by an appearance from Furukawa himself. The ninja leader declares that Kano and Naoko are to be executed for disobeying his orders, but Batman surrenders his life debt to lift the execution order. Naoko and Kano, now owing life debts of their own to Batman, can no longer attack him.
As the ninja depart, Naoko asks Batman why he would go so far to spare his would-be killers' lives. In response, Batman remarks that the two of them are more alike than she imagines.
