Blackhawk Down Part Two

Batman recalls that Zinda Blake was brought into the present time due to temporal distortions during Zero Hour. It took time to adjust with those closest to her gone but Zinda made it a habit to visit her fallen brothers of the Blackhawk Squadron especially Janos Prohaska. However, this time around Zinda discovers Janos' grave has been disinterred from weeks ago and the Batman almost became a new resident of the graveyard.

Zinda had tears in her eyes because she wanted to know who and why someone would desecrate Janos' resting place. Batman informs Zinda that Ted Gaynor may have been responsible but Zinda couldn't believe it because she knew Gaynor to be dead for nearly 60 years. Batman suspects digging up Janos' grave is meant to be a distraction and the mechanized kraken was meant to kill anyone who would come snooping around.

On Zinda's jetplane, Batman informs Zinda about Gaynor's attack at Blackhawk Industries and the theft of the detonation wave propulsion engine schematics. With these engines, Gaynor would have air superiority over any nation. Zinda figures Gaynor would need planes, machining tools and aeronautic-caliber fabrication equipment to design his air fleet. Both of them deduce that Gaynor would have all of this on Blackhawk Island. Zinda figures the best way to access the control tower while remaining under the radar, is from the basement through the island's grotto.

Batman tells Zinda not to bother and have her circle the island until he contacts her with further instructions. Zinda argues with Batman and informs him that she has one eighth invested in Blackhawk Industries so she has a stake in this operation. Batman ignores her and jumps out of the jetplane. Zinda grudgingly admits that Batman is worse than Huntress as a team player.

Batman infiltrates the island and makes short work of Gaynor's men with gas bombs and his fighting skills. Batman reaches a command center and finds someone sitting in front of the giant monitor. Batman assumes it is Gaynor but when he swings the chair around, he finds a corpse with Blackhawk attire. Batman examines the dog tag and notices it belongs to Janos Prohaska.

Suddenly, Gaynor appears on the giant monitor. He informs Batman that the corpse is not Janos but is actually a German soldier named Walter Schoener. Schoener was surgically altered by Dr. Merson to look exactly like Janos. When Schoener had died, his body was kept on ice until Janos was ready to fake his death. There were a select few who knew the truth about Janos' tomb and Gaynor was one of them.

Gaynor expresses his admiration towards Batman since he was able to follow the encrypted transmissions from the cemetery to Blackhawk Island. Meanwhile, Zinda disobeyed Batman's orders and entered through the island's grotto. Zinda hears splashes behind her as if someone had come out of the water. Zinda assumes its Batman but notices a hulking figure in the shadows. Zinda pulls out her gun and shadowy figure says he knew Zinda's scent when she came onto the island.

Zinda figures out that the figure is Haifisch and threatens to shoot him but she doesn't. Haifisch scoffs at her threat because her hand trembles as she aims her gun. Haifisch reaches for Zinda and brushes her blonde hair as he recalls the months they spent together when Zinda was Haifisch's Empress of the Unfathomable Depths. Zinda tries to fight off Haifisch's affections by convincing herself that she was brainwashed by him 60 years ago. Zinda screams at Haifisch's grotesque appearance and tries to run away.

Batman watches as Gaynor's air fleet equipped with the new engine technology takes to the skies. Gaynor threatens Batman that if he pursues him then Zinda will be sleeping with the fish...literally. Gaynor then activates a door behind Batman which reveals a room filled with hungry simian brutes. Gaynor explains that these creatures are the descendants of Bravo, the Blackhawk's pet chimp. They have been living in the wild and surviving by eating any beasts on the island.

The crazed chimps are too much for Batman but he uses a primal strategy to win. Batman uses a gas pellet to incapacitate the alpha male. When the rest of the chimps see the alpha writhing in agony, they back off of Batman. Batman aids the alpha male by providing a syringe to counteract the pain from the gas pellet. Batman tells the apes to leave the Blackhawk compound and return to the jungle region of the island. Batman flies off the island with Zinda's jetplane but his anger towards Gaynor is increased when Blackhawk Island explodes thus killing all inhabitants.

Batman returns to Gotham to interrogate Cheng about Gaynor's familiarity with Blackhawk's assets and facilities because he believes Cheng has been keeping things from him. Cheng faints from Batman's questioning and Batman must survey the room for clues. Batman discovers a Blackhawk statue with an adjustable head. Batman pushes on the hawk's head and it activates a hidden door. Batman walks down the stairs and is greeted by Janos Prohaska who jokingly said its rude to keep an old man waiting.
