"Under a Blood Red Sky"

On Hawkworld, it is revealed that Hawkman) is leading his newly raised army of feline and lizard humanoids. To this end, he has created primitive harnesses fastened to stones containing Nth Metal. With these, his army can now fly and fight the manhawks. Carter and the humanoids attack the manhawks and Carter tortures one of the manhawks until it reveals the location of Hawkgirl). Meanwhile, in the Nth City of Queen Shrike), Hath-Set) taunts Shiera, showing her the gate made from the remains of Hawgirl’s and Hawkman’s past incarnations and describing how it is his greatest achievement. Hath-Set reveals that when they recently died at the hands of the Black Lanterns, it was the first time that they had died at hands of someone other than him. Shiera insists that they will kill him and end the cycle of reincarnation. He begins to repeatedly strike Shiera, but Queen Shrike appears and stops him. Queen Shrike reports that Carter is coming with an army. It is revealed that Hawkgirl and Hawkman are keys that will be used on the gate for an unrevealed purpose. Queen Shrike tells Hath-Set to place the first key, Shiera. As he does so, Carter arrives in the city and begins fighting his way to Shiera. Hath-Set produces a large spike and hammer, using it to pin Shiera to the gate driving the spike through her hands. Shiera screams which will draw Carter to them. Queen Shrike tells Shiera the truth about their past.

In ancient Egypt, Queen Shrike, then known as Khea Taramka, was part of the court of the Pharoah. She was married to the youngest brother of the Pharaoh. Her husband, Chay-Ara’s) father, died from a pestilence and so did the wife of the Pharoah. Queen Shrike married the Pharoah with the understanding that, when Prince Khufu), the Pharoah’s son, was old enough he would be wed to Chay-Ara, her daughter. However, Khufu never needed any prodding because he loved Chay-Ara and their union seemed destined.

As prophesied by the wizard Nabu), a strange ship was found in Egypt by Prince Khufu, Nabu, and the champion Teth-Adam). The ship proved to be a Thanagarian spacecraft. Teth-Adam carried the ship back to the Pharoah, where it was studied inside the Temple of Horus at Erdu. The remaining Nth Metal was examined, and its most obvious property proved to be its ability to negate gravity. The remaining samples were forged into several remarkable devices, including harnessess which allowed Khufu and Chay-Ara to fly, a deadly dagger, and a battle glove referred to as the Claw of Horus.

While Khea saw Nth Metal as having the potential to change the world with Egypt at its center, the Pharoah was not so ambitious and was content to rule Egypt as it was with had no desire for more. Further, he believed the Nth Metal should not be used as a weapon. Khea, however, did not let the matter rest. Soon she found a kindred spirit in the ruthlessly ambitious Hath-Set, a priest of Set posing as a priest of Anubis. Drawn to Hath-Set’s ambition, Khea fell in love and began an affair with him.

Soon, the Pharoah discovered the affair. However, Khea killed him, by pushing him off a palace balcony. She forged a note to make it look like suicide. She then became ruler of Egypt. Khea and Hath-Set, wanting the power for themselves, killed Shiera and Khufu with the Nth Metal dagger to use their blood to become immortal. After years of ruling Egypt, Khea began to crave adventure. This caused her to find a way to search for a source of Nth Metal, which she discovered in the form of Hawkworld. She would eventually conquer Hawkworld and become Queen Shrike.

Now, Khea wants to leave Hawkworld and conquer other lands and will use the gate to do so. As Khea finishes her tale, Carter appears, having defeated her manhawks. Carter confronts Khea, but due to her prolonged exposure to its energies on Hawkworld, Khea can control anything with even a trace amount of Nth Metal via telekinesis, from a weapon composed of it to the bodies of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who had been absorbing a significant amount of it over time.

Khea manipulates the Nth Metal energy in Carter’s body as well as his harness and weapons, pinning him alongside Shiera onto the gate. In the confusion, Hath-Set wanders too close to the gate and, using her legs, Shiera gets a hold of him, breaking his neck. Khea reveals that if Shiera had not killed him she would have because he was part of the curse and his death was needed to open the gate to its desired location, which is revealed to be Zamaron, the home world of the Star Sapphire Corps. With gate opened, she intends to lead her manhawk army to Zamaron.

Back in Gotham City at the Watchtower, Deadman) and Dove) are attempting to discover the identity of the individual that is destined to take the place of the Life Entity. They summon Resurrection Man). However, he is not the chosen one. At that moment, the Batsignal activates and Boston suspects that the Life Entity has been waiting for Batman).
