"Whatever happened to the Manhunter from Mars?"
On Mars, in the future, Martian Manhunter) is being honored by the Martian people and the Justice League of America. They praise him for resurrecting both Mars and those that died there, including J’onn’s family, as well as bringing lasting peace to Earth. J’onn reflects with pride that the return of the Martian race and Mars is his greatest achievement.
Later, when J’onn and his wife, M'yri'ah J'onzz), are about to retire for the night, they are interrupted by J’onn’s daughter, K'hym J'onzz), now grown and a Manhunter. She brings word that there have been a series of murders on Mars. J’onn quickly realizes that he cannot sense the other members of the Justice League of America. Soon, he finds their bodies, except Superman) and learns that they have been murdered in such a way that the perpetrator must have known a great deal about them. For instance, Batman) has been shot with pearl bullets, like those Bruces’ mother wore the night she died.
J’onn begins investigating and soon learns that Superman lives but has been fitted with a Kryptonite mask. J’onn removes the mask and takes Superman into space to absorb the light of the sun and recover.
After, Superman and J’onn investigate the murders while discussing that they will avenge the murders of the Justice League of America. As they examine the bodies, J’onn reveals he envies Superman because, while he was the last Krytponian, he had his human parents to raise him and never had to actually witness his people’s deaths because he was only an infant. J’onn, on the other hand, had to literally bury the entire population of Mars. Shockingly, J’onn’s jealousy results in him furiously attacking Superman with a Kryptonite dagger. As Superman dies, his mysterious last words ask J’onn to "wake up." Soon, J’onn is attacked by the entire population of Mars. They too beg him to "wake up." J’onn finally realizes that these are merely false visions caused by the mental influence of D'Kay D'Razz). He manages to overcome the psychic attack and grabs D'Kay by the throat.
Meanwhile, in the real world at the Justice League of America headquarters, Congorilla) and Starman) play chess. Suddenly, the chess pieces turn to tar and the floor becomes ice. The heroes spring up, believing they are under attack only to see Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond)/Jason Rusch)) glowing with energy. Firestorm tells them he needs their help because he is about to destroy the universe.
