Story synopsis

Years ago, Morbius and Susanna researched individuals with advanced aggression in the Rockhaven community of pacifist vampires, expressing gratitude for the chance to help some of the only people on Earth who could still see him as a doctor. In the present, Manphibian attempts to evoke emotion from the living vampire over the death of N’Kantu, the Living Mummy. Their quarrel becomes violent before it is interrupted by Elsa Bloodstone, carrying a dying Jack Russell to an operating table. The doctor attempts to resuscitate him but makes little progress before Elsa pulls a gun on him, blaming Morbius for the crisis and wanting to know why he didn’t tell them about Dracula and the Angel Grove massacre. Morbius agrees that he owes them an explanation, but must first save Jack.

He remembers a lost patient, one of the controlled vampires he researched with Susanna, and thinking that the virus seems to preempt their attempts. She embraced him, encouraging him to see it with clear eyes in the morning. When that morning came, Morbius saw their patients sleepwalking through the house with Susanna nowhere to be found. He followed them outside to a pit of flames where the vampires fed on innocents, a figure standing above the carnage and laughing.

Elsa busts out of the Legion base, heading for Transylvania and leaving Morbius and Manphibian with Jack, now stabilized. Making up over their earlier dispute and sipping coffee before being interrupted by the Dimensional Man mentioning the heightened stakes. Elsa gears up heavily with anti-vampire weaponry, dousing herself in holy water before infiltrating Castle Dracula. Morbius tells Manphibian of that awful night of gore, and how he watched the vampires return to their sick beds. He would have staked them all, had Susanna not stayed his hand and told him their patients could still be saved. Promising to finish his tale upon his return, Morbius walks through the portal toward Transylvania to join Elsa.

The monster hunter slays myriad vampires as she makes her way to Dracula’s throne and asks the king of vampires what occurred in Angel Grove. He tells her of he and Morbius’ past, his killing of Susanna and the “cure” he provided his patients: death by sunlight. Morbius joins them, asking Elsa to back away before Dracula lunges toward the doctor, picking him up by the throat. He finally reveals to Morbius that Susanna was actually an ancient witch called Bruxal, having developed the virus over centuries and manipulated Morbius to help her refine her virus so she could build an army. Claiming that Bruxal would have killed Morbius, he tells them to leave his castle. Outside, Elsa questions the veracity of Dracula’s claims, Morbius realizes he was bitten by the Chipperfield monster during a medical examination in his early days as a caregiver in Monster Metropolis, and that his blood may be the source of the contagion they face today.
