For Every Life, A Feather
In 1918, a young boy named Jonas witnessed his mother go insane after her husband and daughter died of Spanish flu. In her insanity, she had tried to kill him, and he was forced to run for his life. He ran into the night, and found rest in the aviary of Haly's Circus. Eventually, he was found, and given a job as one of the circus' performers. Though he didn't have the facility for acrobatics or the strongman, the birds' affinity for him led him to become the animal master - a position ideal for him, since his fear had *died* long ago.
Eventually, the Court of Owls) chose him to replace William Cobb) as their Talon, and he trained until he was an adult. Before finally being tested in the Court's labyrinth, he carved *feathers* into his face, recalling that Anubis - the Egyption God of the Dead - would measure each man's heart against a feather. He had done the same, measuring each life he took with another carving.
He would become more than a man, passing through the labyrinth's traps, with ease. However, when faced with the great owl fountain, he mistook it for a respite. Drinking of the water, he was poisoned with hallucinogenics that challenged his resolve, reminding him of his mother's insanity. Five hours later, he had at last recovered, entering the photo-room, where the faces of each of the labyrinth's victims' descent into madness was documented. He would not be like them. He rejected his mother, likening himself to Castor and Pollux, birthed instead from an *egg*, like an *owl*.
Once through, the Court made Jonas face William Cobb in mortal combat, and he succeeded. In his mind, he had become more than a man. He had become the Owl; the Talon - beyond name and humanity. His purpose was only to kill.
