Biography
Frederic Bates studied in Sydney and Newcastle, and was a member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. In 1948, he illustrated the title feature of the Speck Ryan comic book, and also did illustrations for some children's books. His early graphic training inspired him to create the Nugget and Slim comic characters, which appeared in The Land for several years, before taking over that newspaper’s long-running editorial feature, The Burrcutter and His Mate, as a cartoon strip in 1954.
