While Billy Batson is preparing for his regular news radio report for station W.H.I.Z., he receives a caller, Whitey Murphy; Whitey and Billy met while on the Malcolm Expedition (during which they helped film Republic's "The Adventures of Captain Marvel" serial). Whitey informs Billy that the head of that expedition, famous explorer John Malcolm, has disappeared while on another expedition, in the jungles of Central America. Billy spearheads a new expedition to rescue the lost explorer, while announcing to his listening audience his plans to send back daily broadcast reports. After days of trekking deep into the Guatemalan jungle, following Malcolm's trail, they come across an ancient Mayan pyramid, on an island upon a hidden lake. They soon discover that it is the temple of the Monstrous Monkey-God, Itzalotahui. Captain Marvel engages in a terrific struggle with the ancient Mayan god, causing the entire island to rock and tremble. During this battle Whitey wanders through the temple, accidentally coming across a weary Malcom, who had been abandoned by his party, then forced to stay on the island, where he began to succumb to a tropical fever. Led back to Captain Marvel, the hero explains the truth of the terrifying Mayan god, that it is merely an elaborate stone idol, designed over a millennium ago to simply appear alive, thanks to flaring natural gas jostling it. Realizing that if word got out, about the mountainous island being possibly full of millions of dollars worth of natural gas and oil, that the beautiful, peaceful land, as well as the lives of the natives, would be ruined by "White Men's civilization" fighting over the rights, and reducing the locals to forced labor, the trio agree to never reveal their discovery.
