After fighting and defeating Gladius, Barbara Gordon resolves to relax a bit and take a backpacking trip across Eastern Asia. Her first stop is Japan, where she hopes to meet Chiyo Yamashiro, a retired crime-fighter and vigilante. By sheer chance she stumbles on Kai, an old friend she hasn't seen in years. They go out for lunch and catching-up; though Kai gets unexpectely sick and has to go to the bathroom to throw up. The next day Barbara gets to greet Yamashiro. While she engages with the old crime-fighter, a heavily made-up young woman dressed like a Japanese schoolgirl assaults Kai. Barbara suits up and battles her, but the woman is surprisingly fast and nimble and dashes off. She is stopped in her tracks by Chiyo, who proves to be amazingly quick and agile despite being a very old woman. Barbara's adversary doesn't dare fight her and hightails it. Batgirl is thrilled to have the chance to make Fruit Bat questions, but Chiyo starts feeling hurt after straining herself, and it's time for Batgirl getting away. Before she leaves, though, Chiyo warns her that she can not see the future when the past is standing in her way and she needs to find "teacher". Batgirl wonders what kind of trouble Kai has gotten himself into this time, and who this "teacher" is. Remembering Chiyo's words regarding "see the future", Barbara comes across a billboard advertising a martial arts tournamet in Singapore, ran by an organization calls itself "The Future of Multi Martial Arts".

On a trip to Okinawa, Barbara Gordon accidentally meets up with old friend Kai Ma. Barbara is intent on meeting 1940's superhero Chiyo Yamashiro, aka Fruit Bat, still alive at 104. Barbara meets Chiyo the next day at a parade but gets involved in a fight with a kabuki-faced school girl who is beating up Kai, demanding a 'formula'. Amazingly, Fruit Bat appears to stop the fight and send the school girl running. She gives Barbara some advice on how to proceed with her life and from this she decides she must go to a martial arts tournament in Singapore.
In Singapore, Barbara trains at a gym for an exhibition fight with noted fighter Wen Lu on the weekend. In the fight, Barbara is distracted for a second when she notices Wen Lu's tattoo is the same as the one on the schoolgirl in Okinawa, and gets knocked out. After a romantic kiss with Kai, she wonders if it's the right thing, as Kai's attentions to her increase more and more.
Recovering from her bout, Barbara rushes to her apartment in time to disrupt Wen Lu, costumed as a moth, but she escapes. Kai is safe but won't come clean with Barbara so she lives for Seoul to follow Wen Lu. In Seoul, Batgirl must face Wen Lu and another martial arts student but learns that their "teacher" has gone to Shanghai to deal with Kai.

Despite Teacher's new-found abilities as a result of being sprayed with the formula, Batgirl uses advice from Fruit Bat and Kai received in a dream to defeat her She turns her over to Grandfather Blood, in exchange for cancelling the hit on Kai.
