Batman and Batgirl are in Paris, France, waiting to meet inspector Anton Legere of the Paris police. Suddenly, they see three men run into a dead end in an alley, screaming about a "hunchback's ghost". The two disarm the men, but let them go, as they are not the primary mission. Legere finally shows up, and says people have supposedly been seeing the ghost of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He tells Batman information about a man named Andre Julliard, who he suspects is a member of the League of Assassins, but he cannot act because of legal restrictions, so he asked for Batman's help. Together they enter Julliard's apartment and arrest him. They take him to an old monastery to interrogate Julliard about the whereabouts of his leader. However, Julliard attempts to escape, until he is caught by a monstrous, cloaked figure. Batgirl attacks the creature, but it proves to be invulnerable and nonhostile. Batman defuses the situation and the hunchback reveals his history. He used to be a small, sickly police scientist named Alain Mauricet and was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. This led him to experiment with the same chemicals that had transformed Clayface. However, the treatment burned him into a new body with enormous strength without the ability to change shape. Inspired by Batman, Mauricet became the defender of the streets of Paris. When Mauricet plans to take Julliard into an underground chamber, Julliard opens fire on Batgirl but is blocked by Mauricet, who violently extracts the information out of him. As Batman leaves, Batgirl remarks that Legere and Mauricet need some kind of signal, like the Bat-Signal.
