Jason is in a hotel room following his escape from the League of Assassins, assisted by Talia. Upon learning from an old newspaper that Batman allowed the Joker to be arrested after Jason's death rather than killing him in revenge, Jason flies into a rage, smashing up the room and brutally assaulting two hotel employees when they try to intervene. Meanwhile, despite her father's warnings that the Pit may drive him mad, Talia refuses to reveal Jason's location for twenty-four hours. Talia's agents watching Jason discover that the agents Ra's sent to find Jason are getting too close, so they allow Jason to see one of them tailing him, causing him to remove all the tracking devices Talia planted on him and disappear. After losing track of him for twenty hours, they discover that he's headed back to Gotham. Using skills that Bruce taught him, Jason sets up a fake arms deal with the Penguin and ensures that Batman finds out about it. While Batman is staking it out, Jason plants a bomb on the Batmobile. When Batman returns, however, he hesitates and ultimately decides not to detonate it, explaining to Talia afterward that letting Bruce die without knowing who killed him or why would let him off too easily. Talia agrees to help Jason with his quest to kill Bruce with his own hands, but privately she worries that the Pit has made him sociopathic.
