Reading this edition’s market

Compare the same cover, printing and grade before setting a bid. A raw guide or a higher-grade price does not establish a slab’s value. Include selling fees, shipping and the depth of completed-sale evidence when assessing an exit price.

The table includes 2 guide observations and 1 catalog references. These are reference values, not guaranteed sale proceeds.

Anchors Aweigh: "El Diablo, Part 1 (of 10)"

Lieutenant Commander Don Kerry and his friend Red Murphy are two officers of the Navy, working aboard a mighty battleship. One day as the ship gets close to port, the crew is called up on deck by Admiral Allen. After inspection, the Admiral announces that they will be given shore leave upon docking. Because of Don Kerry's fame among the officers, he is given special orders to lead the parade when they go ashore. One of the officers shouts that a small speedboat has been spotted, signalling them. Don and the Admiral have a look, and see that a plane with black wings was chasing the boat, firing a barrage in an attempt to kill the boat's pilot!

At Admiral Allen's orders, Don Kerry and Red Murphy take a plane out to fight off the black winged threat. With Red piloting and Kerry manning the gun, they swoop over the enemy flyer, and unload a round onto his engine. Just then, a second plane attacks! Red is forced to land on the water, and he and Don leap out just as the enemy opens fire. With them temporarily out of the way, the plane continues its chase of the boat, until finally the bullets hit their mark. The plane flies off as the man driving the speedboat dies. When Don Kerry and Red Murphy make it over to his location, they find that the driver left a dying message written in blood: "El Diablo". This they recognize as the name of a well known revolutionary who betrays anyone in order to gain his own ends.

Back in the Admiral's quarters, the dead man is identified as an investigator for the Rio consulate. Kerry is ordered to report to the consulate and to bring in El Diablo, dead or alive! A launch takes Kerry and Red ashore, where two military men are waiting. They offer to drive the Navy men to the consulate. Kerry is bothered by the looks of the car, but he nevertheless gets in. As they ride, Red points out that there are no door handles on the inside. Suddenly, carbon monoxide gas is pumped into the back seat area! The two men in front sneer at them through the glass partition. They are El Diablo's men, and they tell them that he wants revenge for their interference earlier. However unbeknownst to them, Kerry had the foresight to place a napkin between the parts of the door lock, and with a hard nudge, the door opens and he and Murphy are able to escape. They take the two men into custody at gunpoint, knowing that the consulate will have some questions for them.
