Hollywood Calls
*Part I:*
O'Hara is stunned to see standees of *Scribbly* outside the theater and that he's starring in a film called *Hearts Aflame*. Red casually offers they go see the film, but O'Hara is aghast to find he'd have to pay for SRO *for Scribbly* *and* pay an entire $2.50, since he's *his boss*. Red reminds him he was his boss before, but he's a *star* now! O'Hara asks when and *how* this happened as Red explains it started with Clover taking an “aptitude” test. We flash back to see a friend of Clover's, Ella, dash in to her room to tell her her test results from an aptitude test have stated should be her profession of destiny, but is upset when it says her *mechanical* ability would make her a good *welder* or steam fitter. Clover tears hers open to find that it states due to her *dramatic* talent, she should be in Hollywood! She demands Ella help her with the million things she'll “need” to do as a Hollywood star and dumps a handful of envelopes on to her friend to address to “**all the movie studios in Hollywood**” full of unsolicited glamour shots from her family photo album. They send one of her in a swimsuit to MGM, one of her in the garden to Warner Brothers and one of her in a posh dress with a folding fan to Columbia. Scribbly pops in after a few hours of this and offers Clover go on a bike ride with him, but she refuses such a ridiculous idea as sitting on handlebars and a dejected Scribbly leaves, realizing he's being rejected. Clover insists to Ella that Scribbly will forgive her when he finds out she's *famous* and Ella offers mildly that they use a picture with her and him from last year's Hallowe'en party, of her dressed as a ragged pirate and Scribbly dressed as a clown, sending it along to Colossal Pictures.
Two days later, an actress named Gloria Glamour *refuses* to work with her leading man Gary *Sabel*. Her director tries to protest and has a lamp smashed over his head for trying, warning them of her terrible temper as she then throws a desk and a painting at them off-panel. Gloria storms off, saying she'll find her *own* lead actor for this. Her director, CD, dismisses it to his aide, saying that she's a rotten actress and that a *good* lead actor will only serve to *embarrass* her, but due to an ironclad contract, he can't actually *fire* her and worse, she gets the call on who the starring lead is and wants an *unknown* to play off of. They decide that instead of trying to make due, they can turn this on her by casting a *horrible* actor that will lead her to tear up her contract. Thus, they end up finding someone who looks dim from their unsolicited letters and decide Scribbly would be appropriately useless. Soon, Clover's sister informs her of a call from *Hollywood* and is aghast to find that they *aren't* as interested in her, but in *Scribbly*! Clover insists that he's only a boy across the street, but the aid insists that he's going to be a *star* for Colossal Pictures and that he isn't joking when a long distance call costs $3 per minute! A dizzied Clover soon moves to be suspicious instead and decides this is a *prank* that Scribbly has managed somehow.
She goes over to **beat him with a baseball bat**, but is alleviated when Mrs. Jibbet reveals that that *does* seem to be the case, since they're leaving for Hollywood shortly as when Colossal Pictures calls you to fly out, you don't *ask questions*, you *fly there*! Snoony is equally frustrated by his seemingly talentless brother. Scribbly challenges him on this, packing marshmallows into his cheeks, slips a pillow under his shirt and does something with his nose until he suddenly resembles Oliver “Babe” Hardy with his glasses off. Whipping off his tiny derby hat, he is somehow able to cobble together a Groucho Marx disguise. Clover is stunned by his seeming acting prowess, but Scribbly admits he *also* doesn't get it, just presuming he has some kind of talent he doesn't understand. When asked about his job at the *Morning Bugle*, he calls up O'Hara, reminding him of all the times he's insulted him for his injurious clumsiness or his ignorant mistakes and lets loose on him in a tirade. Mrs. Jibbet worries this may burn bridges, but Scribbly insists that he'll be *bragging* about knowing Scribbly soon enough. Dinky shouts back that he'll be bragging soon that he *formerly* had a *job* as Scribbly races off to the airport. Later, Dinky insists that Scribbly *isn't* in any way a trained or legitimate actor and Sisty agrees to protect him (if at least from himself) by calling up her ridiculous assortment of “cousins.”
*Part II:*
Gloria Glamour demands to see her new lead actor, Scribbly Jibbet, until they find that his trunk has been delivered, seemingly *before him*. CD tries to calm her as Scribbly arrives and Gloria begins strangling him in a fit of rage, not realizing he's there now. Gloria soon tears up her contract and says she's leaving to get married to someone in Las Vegas for an easy life of luxury and CD begins dancing and doing cartwheels in celebration, off-handedly mentioning to his aid that they *never* needed Scribbly there to start with. His aid tries to call him long-distance (not realizing he's there) until CD openly points it out and mildly apologizes. The aid opens “Scribbly's” trunk and finds it's full of Dinky, Sisty & the Hunkel Cousins, who start claiming to be “**vacuum-packed talent scouts**” and capture CD & his aid, demanding a camera for Scribbly to act in front of, but he chokes. Dinky insists if he can't act, he should *sing* and he *sure did*!
We cut back to O'Hara pointing out Scribbly *can't sing* (and that Widow-Maker was on-set for the film!) as women swoon over the saccharine soprano voice of Scribbly Jibbet that seems to cause an inner-ear problem. Red points out she's wearing *earplugs* so it won't affect her, although even O'Hara passes out from it soon enough. In *Hearts Aflame*, Scribbly finds Widow-Maker is woozy from his song too and calls for a horse doctor.
*Part III:*
Clover is furious that *Scribbly* is getting the attention of other women on the front pages of *several* newspapers and writes him a letter encouraging him to *forget* about her and has a clip of the girls kissing him included. At the *Morning Bugle*, O'Hara is just as furious, since it means *Scribbly* is all he gets to publish about! He thinks on how he calls for a copy boy just to *see* if Scribbly shows up, only to find a portly child who is dressed *exactly* like Scribbly. He soon finds that the *rest* of the copy boys have a similar look, because Scribbly is now *also* a fashion icon (for some reason they also have a **dalmatian** as a copy boy.) A tired and defeated O'Hara goes to his barber to get a haircut, but falls asleep. Joe the Barber has his assistant Mike go get him some things from the store he's *sure* will make O'Hara feel younger and less tired… only for 20 minutes later, a furious O'Hara finds that his barber **changed his clothes while he was asleep** to give him **the Scribbly Look**. Seeing himself in the mirror, O'Hara goes insane and professes he's **not Scribbly**, not O'Hara, and that he *is* a Mexican jumping bean before leaping through his plate-glass picture window, bouncing ridiculously into the street. Later, Red gets a call about his and tells Mr. Birdnest that O'Hara has lost it for good this time as they only got him to the hospital by claiming it was **a bowl of chili**. Red says the Scribbly Rage has cracked him and Mr. Birdnest decides he'll have to end this Scribbly Rage if it means getting O'Hara back!
*Part IV:*
A tour guide on a Hollywood Sight-Seeing Bus announces they're coming to Scribbly's house and Mrs. Jibbet gets off there to get there, since she's spending more frugally now. She opens her expansive purse to show off that it's bursting to the seams with money and worries that there won't *be* any for Scribbly himself! Mrs. Jibbet looks around his house, stepping in his petunias, earning the ire of his butler until she explains who she is, only to find five other *insane* women living there, each claiming to be Scribbly's mother! A mysterious man in a derby and a clearly fake beard asks which one is Scribbly's mother and says that he has a legal summons, since Scribbly is now ***$2,000,000,000.64 in debt***, prompting them all to run away in terror from having to pay it. Mrs. Jibbet declares that she's *willing* to make sure that her son is protected even if he *does*. The mystery man says he'll take a *single kiss* instead, pecking her on the cheek and she clobbers him with her large purse, only to find it's Snoony standing on Scribbly's shoulders and they admit they've had to do this *a few times*. Mrs. Jibbet asks if he's *happy* and he says he *is* rich, has a butler and a pool, but Dinky points out he *also* has a full work day, a full work *night* on radio and television, then on his day off he has *more interviews*, can't get an ice cream soda without mobs of autograph hounds after him, Clover broke up with him and, worst of all, his voice is *changing*, meaning he'll never be able to sing like this again and is losing sleep over this. Scribbly admits to it finally, but that he's also worried that he can't get his old job back. Mr. Birdnest and Clover appear behind him, him saying he's *fine* with taking him back and Clover promises she'll take him back if it means he's not mobbed by girls. A few weeks later, O'Hara has readjusted to life without the Scribbly Rage in the media. However, when he calls for a copy boy and finds *Scribbly's back*, he immediately reverts once more into being a “Mexican jumping bean” again…

| Notes = * "Hollywood Calls" is a four-chapter story, with each chapter being as long as a standard Scribbly story. ** This chapter recalls when Scribbly's then-unnamed brother becoming a Hollywood star in The Funnies# 20-23, when Scribbly mistakenly believes himself to have eaten a "Mexican jumping bean" in Comic Cavalcade Vol 1 7|Comic Cavalcade# 7 and the MUM Scandal from Scribbly Vol 1 5|Scribbly# 5 | Trivia = * The Horse in *Hearts Aflame* is the same Widow-Maker we've seen before: A horse with spots, especially over one of his eyes. * Despite the cover, Clover **doesn't** nearly strangle Mr. Birdnest seeing Scribbly act in a film. Instead, she is upset that he's been photographed in public being mobbed and kissed by other girls, Mr. Birdnest isn't harmed in any way and Scribbly's romantic number seems to be a duet with a drowsy Widow-Maker. | Recommended = | Links =
