Reading this edition’s market
Compare the same cover, printing and grade before setting a bid. A raw guide or a higher-grade price does not establish a slab’s value. Include selling fees, shipping and the depth of completed-sale evidence when assessing an exit price.
The table includes 1 guide observations and 0 catalog references. These are reference values, not guaranteed sale proceeds.
Graded population
CGC records 10 graded copies for Tales of the Unexpected #5 (1956). Population is the number recorded by this grading source, not the total print run or all surviving copies.
The Man Who Laughed At Locks
An inventor by the name of Emmet Durham visits the home of fellow inventor Carl Farr. Durham marvels at the inventions that Farr has created. He observes as Farr demonstrates a vacuum cleaner that works on its own without human assistance. He also witnesses Farr flash an incredible beam of light from a simple flashlight. Durham is fraught with jealousy and decides to murder Farr and claim the inventions as his own, Durham drops a boulder overlooking Farr's laboratory and supposedly kills Farr as it smashes through the building. Durham immediately proceeds to sell the newly acquired inventions and markets them as his own. One night there is a knock at the door and Durham watches as Farr's ghost walks through the door. The ghost informs Durham that he is aware that Durham was the one who murdered him and stole his inventions. The ghosts threatens to haunt Durham every night at seven pm the moment he was killed unless Durham turns himself in to the authorities. Durham attempts to escape the ghost by locking himself in an armored car and a bank vault but to no avail. Farr's ghost is easily able to penetrate any barrier to haunt Durham. Durham is filled with fright and immediately turns himself in to confess. He is then surprised as the real Farr emerges in human form. Farr reveals that he escaped Durhams trap and used his ghostly disguise to make him confess.
