Reading this edition’s market

Compare the same cover, printing and grade before setting a bid. A raw guide or a higher-grade price does not establish a slab’s value. Include selling fees, shipping and the depth of completed-sale evidence when assessing an exit price.

Fox on the Run

Vixen) chases down a plane in the rain, but when she is stopped by someone, an invisible assailant rips out the man's spine before her eyes. She escapes clinging to the leg of the plane. Elsewhere, Animal Man) saves a fox from hunters in England in the name of an activist group.

Back in San Diego, Vixen appears at the Baker household door, where Ellen Baker) and her friend Tricia Denning are discussing the effects that the Gene Bomb had on Animal Man's powers.

At Arkham Asylum, Dr. James Highwater) hopes to meet the Psycho Pirate). He is startled by an escaped Mad Hatter), who claims that they are all words on a page, and that some cheap hack is writing their lives. Psycho-Pirate is obviously still affected by the recent crisis, and fears being erased from continuity. He indicates a message for Dr. Highwater, which seems to be a page from an Animal Man comic book.

Buddy returns home, where Vixen explains that she is still being chased by some kind of invisible creatures. Suddenly, the invisible creatures burst into the Bakers' living room. Vixen uses a smoke bomb to reveal their assailants, but when Buddy looks into their eyes, his body unravels and crumbles to dust. As the smoke dissipates, the yellow aliens who gave him his powers appear, stating that they will now take charge.

| Notes = * This story takes place less than a year after the events of issue #1, placing these events in the first months of 1989. ** However, the calendar from Baker Home implies that these events happen in June, which cannot be possible, as issue #1 occurred in May 1988. * This issue features Buddy Baker's Post-Crisis origin story– originally shown in Secret Origins Vol 2 39– as a prologue. ** According to this issue, Animal Man debuted in 1979– ten years before the events in the present. * Buddy Baker has brief flashes of the Earth-One continuity. This yet-to-be-named phenomenon is the so-called *Mandela Effect* and is a direct consequence of the reboot caused by the Crisis– mentioned throughout the issue. * Hamed Ali originally appeared in Showcase Vol 1 66, which featured the origin of B'wana Beast, in the Earth-One continuity. This issue marks his first Post-Crisis appearance. * This issue is reprinted in Animal Man: Origin of the Species (Collected), Animal Man Omnibus (Collected), Animal Man by Grant Morrison 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Book One (Collected), and Animal Man by Grant Morrison Book One (Collected). | Trivia = * Hayden mentions several Earths destroyed or merged into New Earth during The Crisis: Earth-One, Earth-Two, Earth-S, Earth-X, Earth-Four, Earth-Prime. He also subtly breaks the Fourth Wallò by mentioned the *Crisis on Infinite Earths* writer, Marv Wolfman. * Upon meeting Vixen, Buddy Baker jokes about the girl having been bit by a "radioactive fox," which is obviously a nod to Spider-Man's origin story. | Recommended = | Links =
