Unnatural Selection

London, England, 1859: Beneath the streets of London, Scott Summers is being harassed from all sides by the low-life freaks of this world. Without his ruby quartz visor, Cyclops opens his eyes shortly to be able to see where he exactly is and to scare off the people around him. He then tries to reach out telepathically to Jean, who notices him but cannot establish a reliable contact. As she walks away from Westminster Abbey, she is approached by Sanctity of the Askani Sisterhood. The woman from the future informs Jean, that she and Scott have 48 hours to stop “the evil one” and that the forking paths of destiny meet at Milbury House, where Jean will find a man named Essex.

In Milbury House, Nathaniel Essex still tries to calm down his pregnant wife, Rebecca, who is frantic because Essex’s experiments have gone too far and not even the dead body of his son, Adam, is exempt from it. But the visitor En Sabah Nur tells Essex to just let his wife go, so he can show him his scientific work. Essex explains that the time of the “great mutation” is upon them, not knowing yet that the first great mutation of mankind is standing right in front of him. When Essex tells his guest that he has an appointment with the Hellfire Club – his last chance for support – En Sabah Nur decides to accompany him.

Jean has returned to Westminster Abbey and from the church’s highest point, she can finally chat telepathically with her husband, Scott. She tells him about the mission the Askani laid upon them, but before joining her, Scott believes he still has a goal to achieve in the sewers. He doubts he arrived at that location by chance. Therefore, Jean decides to travel to Milbury House by herself.

At the graveyard of the Essex estate, Jean speaks to Rebecca, who babbles about how her son's death poisoned her husband's mind. Jean wants to find Essex and enters the annex where one of the freaks lets her know that Essex and a disguised Apocalypse went to the Hellfire Club. As Jean follows the trail of Essex, Cyclops attacks the Marauders and, thus, frees the people they had crammed into the sewers below the city.

At the Hellfire Club, Apocalypse reveals his true form, which proves to Essex that his theories are correct. By showing off his power, Apocalypse makes sure that the Hellfire Club will obey him. As they exit the Club, they are being watched by Scott and Jean, who just had reunited a minute ago. Now, both X-Men finally understand that Essex will become Mister Sinister. Scott is already weighing whether he should kill Essex after all this man will do to his family in the future. But then, both Scott and Jean are attacked by Marauders who have been physically enhanced by Apocalypse’s alien technology. And as Essex watches, fascinated by the display of mutant powers, Apocalypse joins the fight himself. Jean quickly gets separated from Scott as she falls into the river, and then Cyclops is defeated by Apocalypse. En Sabah Nur hands his victim over to Nathaniel, who shall dissect him as part of his studies. Essex still is unsure if he should fully ally himself with Apocalypse, but En Sabah Nur awaits his final decision before the next sunset.

After Apocalypse has left, Essex walks along the river when he comes across Jean, who is climbing out of the river and desperately looking for her husband …
